Fallen State

In 2039 the world is accelerating toward financial collapse. Conflict, poverty, and famine are on the rise. The global power structure is changing, though it remains uncertain to what end.

Evan Erling, a skilled programmer of injectable nanobots capable of modifying the function of the human brain, is experiencing his own crisis. Two years ago he lost his job after a software virus, which exploited a weakness in his company's programs, killed millions of nanobot users and brought down his entire industry. In the aftermath of the virus, Evan lost his purpose and his motivation and turned to alcohol to mask his grief.

Just as Evan finally decides to give up on his future career prospects, a new but dangerous opportunity arises for selling and personalizing the now-illegal nanobots on the black market. And though the opportunity promises to be lucrative, it threatens to overturn his life and strip him of everything, even his own mind.
